I've been bald a long time, over the years I have had lots of questions from people, here are the most asked questions.

Question 1

Why? This question comes in many forms... Why do you shave your head? Why did you do that to yourself? Why on earth would you do that to yourself?

Enquiring minds are going to ask, we are only human and we have an inquisitive nature but how this line is delivered can make all the difference in how you answer. If the person is genuinly interested then I will take the time to explain about my ADHD and Trich double whammy, but if they approach me with a mocking tone to the question, I will mention the charity side of my head shave. If it's more of a "Why did you do that?" then I will flip the question on to them "Why did you dye yours?". They normally don't have to reply to get the point.

Question 2

How do you shave your head?

Depending on whether I want a smooth shave or a quick shave depends on what I do. If it's a quick shave then I will use a set of detailing clippers, slightly larger than a beard trimmer but slighty smaller than full hair clippers. It takes about 10-15 mins at the most.

If I want a smooth shave then I will use a Double Edge safety Razor. I am still experimenting with blades to find the ones that suit me the most so that tends to slow me down a bit, but a wet shave normally takes me about an hour from start to finish.

Question 3

How often do you shave your head?

For me, it depends entirely on what shave method I used last. If I use the clippers then I tend to shave every 2 days, but if I have had a smooth shave I know I can last 4 days before my next shave. Having said that everyones hair grows differently depending on diet etc, so you may find you need to shave more or less often.

Question 4

What do your partner/family/friends think about it?

Me and my partner have been together for 12 years so he has seen me with and without hair. When I first told him that I wanted to shave my head he acted as my rational side (the adhd can make me act impulsively), it was his idea to raise money for charity so that I had a reason if people asked. I have tried to grow my hair out a few times over the years but always ended up shaving it back off again. We are at the point now where he can't imagine me with hair and he loves the confidence being bald has given me.

My friends and family were ok too, they knew I was going to do it and most sponsored me to.

My daughter was 6 months old when I shaved my head so she doesn't remember me with hair but she knows why I shave my head and she even helps. My son was about 2 when I shaved my head, so again he doesn't remember me with hair but he has asked lots of questions about it and is happy his mum rocks a baldie.

Question 5

Should I shave my head?

Honestly, I am not about to sit here and tell you what to do with your hair, but I can say if you want to shave your head then you should. I mean it's just hair, it holds no bearing on who you are as a person. Discuss it with family and friends, that way you can gauge what their reactions will be like if you do go ahead and shave. But ultimately the decision has to be YOURS, it is your hair and you are the one that has to walk around with a bald head. That being said if you are still a minor then I am not advising this without parental input.

Question 6

Can I touch it?

Ummmmm.... Sorry but that's a no!

Nevermind the fact we are in the middle of a pandemic and we aren't meant to even shake hands or high5, but even if you asked me 5 years ago the answer would still of been no. I do not want your hands (lord knows where they've been) touching my scalp when there are possibly small nicks and cuts from shaving, then there is the fact I touch my own head and don't want whatever is on your hands on mine and you shouldn't want whatever is on mine.

I am in the process of uploading to youTube but in the meantime, if you are thinking about shaving your head for the first time, here are the links to some of my favourite head shave videos and the lovely ladies who helped me make my mind up. And a few newer ones too.
